Cobalt
Cobalt-based accelerators for controlled curing of compatible polyester and vinyl ester resin systems.
In composite manufacturing, “cobalt” commonly refers to a liquid cobalt-based accelerator rather than metallic cobalt. Cobalt octoate is one such accelerator used in suitable resin and organic-peroxide curing systems. VIP Global Co. supplies cobalt accelerators through its commercial partners for industrial composite applications, with product selection based on the customer’s resin system and processing requirements.

The Role of Cobalt in Resin Curing
A cobalt accelerator promotes the decomposition of a compatible peroxide initiator, helping generate the radicals needed to start resin curing. Its role differs from that of the peroxide itself: the two components work together within a properly specified curing system.
The accelerator formulation and dosage can affect gel time and cure behaviour. Temperature, resin chemistry, peroxide selection, fillers and other additives also influence the result. A curing package should therefore be selected and validated as a complete system rather than by cobalt concentration alone.
Colour-Sensitive Applications
For white artificial stone, light-coloured decorative parts or transparent composites, the effect of the curing package on final colour is an important selection criterion. Specially formulated accelerators may be suitable where reduced colour influence is required.
An accelerator intended for colour-sensitive applications is not necessarily colourless in its liquid state. Final appearance depends on the complete formulation, dosage, fillers, pigments and curing conditions. Evaluate a representative sample before production; a product description alone does not guarantee a colourless finished part.
Applications in Polyester and Vinyl Ester Composites
Cobalt accelerators are used with compatible unsaturated polyester resins and selected vinyl ester systems. Potential applications include:
- FRP and GRP components made using qualified ambient-temperature curing processes.
- Composite tanks, pipe components, panels and moulded parts.
- Artificial stone and decorative products requiring carefully controlled cure and appearance.
- Selected transparent or light-coloured composite products, using formulations developed for those requirements.
Not every resin requires additional cobalt. Some resins are supplied pre-accelerated, while others use different curing packages. Check the resin’s technical instructions before adding an accelerator.
Selecting the Right Accelerator
To identify an appropriate product, consider the resin type, existing accelerator content, peroxide system, operating temperature and desired working time. Cobalt concentration, solvent composition, viscosity and other formulation characteristics vary between products. These differences can affect handling and cure response.
Viscosity, density, solids content and other numerical properties are formulation-specific and should not be treated as universal specifications for all cobalt accelerators. Request the technical data sheet for the actual product being quoted.
Validate gel time, cure development and final appearance under representative production conditions. Follow the resin, accelerator and peroxide suppliers’ approved instructions; this page does not prescribe a universal mixing ratio.
Handling and Storage
Never mix concentrated cobalt accelerator directly with an organic peroxide, including MEKP. Follow the approved procedure for incorporating each component separately into the resin system. Keep accelerator and peroxide storage areas segregated in accordance with their safety instructions.
Review the product’s Safety Data Sheet before use. Provide suitable ventilation and use the protective equipment specified for the selected formulation. Keep containers closed and protect them from contamination, direct sunlight and incompatible materials. Storage temperature, shelf life and transport requirements must follow the actual product’s documentation.
Supply Through VIP Global Co.
VIP Global Co. can arrange sourcing and shipment through our commercial partners in Iran or our representation in the United Arab Emirates. Product availability, packaging, technical documentation and shipping arrangements are confirmed for each enquiry.
Share your resin type, peroxide system, application, required quantity and destination. If colour consistency or transparency is critical, include that requirement so suitable sourcing options can be assessed.
