MEKP for Polyester and Vinyl Ester Resins

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide curing agents for industrial FRP and GRP applications.

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, commonly known as MEKP, is an organic peroxide initiator used in suitable thermoset resin curing systems. Commercial products are formulated peroxide solutions; their composition and reactivity vary. VIP Global Co. arranges MEKP sourcing for composite manufacturers through its commercial network, with selection based on the resin, production process and destination.

What MEKP Does

MEKP initiates the free-radical reaction that cures compatible unsaturated polyester resins. Many ambient-temperature systems use an accelerator, commonly cobalt-based, alongside the peroxide. MEKP and the accelerator have different functions and must be selected as a compatible curing package.

Although often called a “catalyst” or “hardener” in the trade, MEKP is more precisely a curing initiator. It is not an interchangeable substitute for an epoxy hardener. Use it only with resin systems for which the applicable technical documentation specifies a suitable peroxide cure.

Polyester and Vinyl Ester Compatibility

MEKP formulations are available for unsaturated polyester and selected vinyl ester resins. General-purpose polyester products are not automatically the best choice for every vinyl ester formulation. The peroxide package and accelerator system must match the resin supplier’s recommendations.

Before changing curing agents, assess the working time and cure response in representative trials. Take account of production temperature, part geometry, filler loading and the resin’s existing accelerator content.

Applications in Composite Manufacturing

Depending on the selected formulation and resin system, applications can include:

  • Hand lay-up and spray-up laminates.
  • Gelcoats, moulded panels and sanitaryware.
  • FRP and GRP pipe components, tanks and marine parts.
  • Selected casting, artificial stone and polymer-concrete processes.
  • Qualified filament-winding and centrifugal-casting processes.

Different processes require different working times and cure behaviour. A product suitable for one application should not automatically be used in another.

Choosing a Suitable MEKP Formulation

Selection involves more than a single concentration figure. Review the actual product’s technical data sheet and confirm the following:

Selection factorWhat to confirm
Resin and processSuitability for the resin formulation and manufacturing method.
ReactivityWorking time and cure response under production conditions.
Active oxygen and compositionThe quoted product’s specified values and formulation.
Accelerator packageCompatibility with the resin’s approved curing system.
Storage and shelf lifeProduct-specific temperature limits and validity conditions.
Packaging and transportApproved container, classification and route requirements.

Supplier specifications may differ in active oxygen, diluent, water content, density and other characteristics. Do not assume products with similar names or concentration figures are interchangeable. Follow approved dosing instructions and validate any substitution; this page does not prescribe a universal addition rate.

Essential Handling and Storage

Never mix MEKP directly with concentrated cobalt accelerators or other concentrated promoters. Follow the approved resin-system procedure for separate incorporation.

Organic peroxides can undergo hazardous decomposition if overheated or contaminated. Keep them in their approved original packaging, away from heat, ignition sources and incompatible materials. Use the product’s Safety Data Sheet for segregation, ventilation, protective equipment and emergency procedures.

The Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature (SADT) is not a recommended storage temperature. Follow the formulation-specific storage limits and shelf-life conditions. Packaging and transport classification must also be confirmed for the selected product and shipment.

Supply Through VIP Global Co.

VIP Global Co. can coordinate sourcing through commercial partners in Iran or our representation in the United Arab Emirates. Availability and shipment depend on the selected product, destination and applicable dangerous-goods transport requirements.

Share your resin type, manufacturing method, required quantity and delivery destination. Where available, include your existing curing-agent specification and desired working time. Our team can assess sourcing options and coordinate the relevant technical documentation, packaging and logistics before confirming the quotation.
