Unsaturated Polyester & Vinyl Ester Resins
VIP Global Co. supplies a broad range of unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins for FRP/GRP manufacturers across the Middle East and neighbouring markets.
Our sourcing approach is application-driven: we match resin chemistry, processing method, service conditions, packaging and commercial requirements to help customers select technically suitable grades with reliable quality and competitive regional pricing.

Choosing the Right Resin for FRP/GRP Applications
The resin system is one of the most important elements in a composite laminate. It affects processing behaviour, glass wet-out, cure profile, mechanical performance, water resistance, chemical resistance, thermal performance and long-term durability. There is no single resin that is best for every application; the correct choice depends on the operating environment and manufacturing process.
Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)
Unsaturated polyester resin is the workhorse matrix of the composite industry. It offers excellent processing flexibility and a strong cost-to-performance balance for hand lay-up, spray-up, RTM, infusion, filament winding, pultrusion, casting and SMC/BMC.
- Orthophthalic: economical general-purpose grades for standard composite applications.
- Isophthalic: improved water, hydrolytic and chemical resistance for tanks, pipes, marine and industrial components.
- DCPD: often selected for low shrinkage, good surface quality and efficient moulding processes.
- Specialty UPR: fire-retardant, low-styrene, low-emission, high-temperature and process-specific systems.
Vinyl Ester Resin
Vinyl ester resin is generally selected for more demanding environments where higher toughness, corrosion resistance, hydrolytic stability or structural performance is required.
- Bisphenol-A Epoxy Vinyl Ester: widely used in corrosion-resistant FRP tanks, pipes, pultruded profiles, rebar and marine structures.
- Novolac Epoxy Vinyl Ester: designed for more severe chemical exposure and elevated-temperature service.
- Specialty VE Systems: fire-retardant, brominated, elastomer-modified and other application-specific grades.
Polyester vs Vinyl Ester: Practical Comparison
| Selection Factor | Unsaturated Polyester | Vinyl Ester |
|---|---|---|
| Cost Position | More economical; strong cost/performance balance | Higher material cost, usually selected where service conditions justify it |
| Chemical Resistance | Good to very good depending on chemistry | Generally superior for aggressive chemical environments |
| Water / Hydrolytic Resistance | Application-dependent; isophthalic and specialty grades preferred for wet service | Typically excellent for severe wet and corrosive service |
| Toughness / Fatigue | Good, with a broad formulation range | Typically higher toughness and fatigue resistance |
| Processing | Very broad process flexibility | Compatible with many conventional FRP processes; grade selection is critical |
Typical Applications
GRP/FRP Pipes & Tanks
Isophthalic polyester can be suitable for standard water and moderate industrial service, while vinyl ester is commonly preferred for aggressive chemical or higher-temperature environments.
Pultrusion & Composite Rebar
Both polyester and vinyl ester systems are used. Resin viscosity, reactivity, wet-out, line speed and required mechanical properties should be matched to the process.
Marine & Water Contact
Isophthalic, NPG-modified polyester and vinyl ester systems are widely used depending on the required blister resistance, water uptake and structural durability.
RTM & Infusion
Low viscosity, controlled exotherm, gel time and reinforcement wet-out are key selection parameters for closed-mould processes.
Information Required for Resin Selection
For a technically accurate quotation, buyers should specify as much of the following information as possible:
- Required chemistry: orthophthalic, isophthalic, DCPD, bisphenol-A vinyl ester, novolac vinyl ester, etc.
- Manufacturing process: hand lay-up, spray-up, RTM, infusion, filament winding, pultrusion, SMC/BMC or casting.
- Promoted or unpromoted system and thixotropic or non-thixotropic requirement.
- Target viscosity, gel time, HDT and other mechanical or thermal requirements.
- Chemical medium, concentration, operating temperature and expected service conditions.
- Required standards, approvals or customer specifications.
- Packaging preference: drums, IBCs or bulk supply.
- Required quantity and delivery destination.
